Introduction

“The only thing that walks back from the tomb with the mourners and refuses to be buried is the character of a man. What a man is…survives him; it can never be buried.” — J.R. Miller

Men, listen to me and hear me clearly, life is short. Your time is a vapor, here for a moment and then gone. What will your life leave behind? One day, you will be gone, and the question that will outlast you is simple but brutal: what will walk back from your life when the mourners leave? Your wealth? Your titles? Or your character? Will anything of you survive after you’re gone? Nothing else matters, not your possessions, not your accolades, not your victories, only what you built in who you were, how you lived, and what you stood for.

King David, in his final moments, gathered his family and said, “I am about to go the way of all the earth.” Those words in 1 Kings aren’t poetic, they’re painfully matter-of-fact. Every one of us will “go the way of all the earth,” no exceptions, no extensions, no second runs.

And if that’s true, if our time is undeniably limited, then the real question isn’t how long we’ll live, but how intentionally we will live with the days we’re given. Mortality isn’t meant to scare us, it’s meant to sober us, to focus us, to draw our attention toward what actually matters and away from the noise that steals our hours.

So I ask again, what will your life leave behind? This is the question that shaped the way I see my own father, my own life, and the fight I’ve been called to.

In 2014, sitting in a high school pep rally as a head football coach, my phone rang. It was my dad. I stepped outside, and when I answered, I heard him crying, something I’d only heard once before in the nineteen years that we actually had a relationship. He was crying because a doctor had given him six months to live. My father, a man who drank from his teens, who had seven wives, no real relationships, no legacy, was on borrowed time again.

I flew to Kentucky, hoping to reconcile. I walked into his house. It was empty. The only furniture: two leather chairs and a TV. That was the measure of his life, hollow, bare, unfulfilled.

He would live another ten years, drinking himself into oblivion, calling me in the car with some woman, pretending we had a relationship. By 2022, it got worse. One night, he called claiming to have been communicating telepathically with my daughter. That was it for me. I couldn’t take it anymore. On August 6, 2022, I got the call, he was gone. No one at his bedside, no tears, no legacy, nothing.

I’m not telling you this to bash him. I’m telling you the truth because truth saves. He allowed pain to shape him, and to define him. That’s the problem. Pain can shape you, but only God can define you.

Men, hear me, your pain doesn’t have to define you, but it will if you don’t fight.

I know something about fighting. I was born to a teenage mother, raised in a house with an abusive stepfather, fatherless to age seventeen. I wrestled with identity my entire life, trying to figure out who I was, trying to fill a void. I tried to find it in roles, kid preacher, runner, football coach, salesman, and business owner. I built my worth on respect, performance, winning, titles, and numbers. I even used my players as pawns, trying to heal myself through victory.

During those years, alcohol became my off switch, my escape, my crutch. It could have killed me, just like it killed my father. But God had other plans. He gave me three daughters, a loving wife, and a chance to reclaim my life.

Men, this book is for you. It’s for the men who feel lost, who have scars they hide, who are chasing identity in everything but Christ. It’s for the men who want to break cycles, who want to leave a legacy, who want to be built for the fight.

Because here’s the truth: pain can shape you, but only God can define you. Identity in Christ is what fulfills. Everything else is a mask. Everything else is a lie.

This is a book about redemption, about hope, about how God can take broken clay and mold it into what He always intended.

And it’s about how He can do it for you too, if you are willing to fight.
